VIDEO: Using The Student Index

TreeRing's index feature is a useful tool to help you equally represent your school community in the yearbook. You can quickly see who is pictured in the book and which pages they are on, along with who is missing from the yearbook.  This video will also show you how to copy and paste the index onto a page in the yearbook.

Well, that works to a point. 1) the list I copied is considerably longer than the one page where I pasted it. (And ours is short compared to what some schools deal with!) Even after I reduce the font on the visible text, and click on the 'left margin' icon so the text is aligned left, I still can't get to the part of the index that is not visible but which was presumably pasted in. How do I retrieve it so I can put it in a second column or, more accurately copy it to a new text box so i can make two columns? 2) the top line of the index says (and this is true even on your demo) 'Name (grade) pages' but there is no 'grade' that shows when the information is pasted to the text box - only the name and page numbers.

    Hi Anne,
The easiest way to handle a longer Index is to paste outside of TreeRing first (e.g. Word) and then cut and paste into multiple text boxes back in TreeRing.
    I hope that helps!

I have so many issues with the software. 1) Not being able to assign columns to text boxes is crazy. For an index page, columns are almost 100% needed to make them look nice. I should either be able to make on large text box and then set it to have three columns or be able to link text boxes so overflow will go to the next one. I've seen that in almost every single text editing program. 2) Text wrap is also missing which is mind boggling. It would help to have images on the index, but again it is tough to do with the software. There is a lot I like about the ease of use, but these basic tools that offer a lot in the way of design is frustrating.

    Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for the feedback. I can tell by that raised eyebrow in your profile pic you're not one to mess with, so I'll shoot it to you straight. Our text boxes are not the best, especially when dealing with Index pages. We've got some major updates coming for next year (17-18) In the short-term I have a few suggestions to help 1) Use a new text box for each column, 2) if you have a really large index, copy from TreeRing, paste to Excel or google sheet and then break it into the equal columns you'll want on your pages, then paste back to TreeRing into a text box for each column. 3) Lastly, we'd be happy to layout your index pages for you. Send an email to cesupport@treering.com
I hope that helps a little bit. Thanks for your patience and working with us while we try to make the app better and better.
